Catherine’s practice focuses on
the defence of hospitals and nurses in medical malpractice
claims. She acts for hospitals throughout the province in
the defence of serious medical malpractice claims, with
a particular emphasis on obstetrical cases and brain damage
claims.Catherine regularly appears as trial counsel and
appellate counsel in the Supreme Court of British Columbia
and the British Columbia Court of Appeal.
In addition to her trial practice, Catherine
provides advice to hospitals on matters to do with quality
assurance, nursing practice and procedure, medical appeal
board issues and consent to treatment. She lectures regularly
to health care professionals and to lawyers on the defence
of medical malpractice claims as well as on expected standards
of care, charting, patient consent and a variety of legal
and ethical issues confronting hospitals. She is a lecturer
in the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia,
instructing medical students on end of life decision making,
patient consent and biomedical ethics.
